Internal medicine is a very broad subject area and is part of every examination we do. Whether we are looking at a sick foal or an underperforming horse, internal medicine is the base that needs covered first.

In some cases, specific organs may be affected and in others there could be a syndrome to investigate. Often specific function tests, imaging or laboratory tests are required.

We have all levels of investigation and treatment covered by our vet at Tullyraine Equine Clinic, the specialists we collaborate with or through referral to a hospital.

Examples of the issues we deal with are:

  • Gastro-intestinal disease: Gastric ulcers/colic/endoparasites
  • Respiratory disease: Lung disease/strangles
  • Cardiac disease: arrhythmias/ murmurs/ heart insufficiency
  • Weight loss/Ill thrift: dental pathology/work burdens/ grass sickness
  • Endocrine syndromes: Cushing’s disease/Equine Metabolic Syndrome/ laminitis
  • Neurological conditions: Wobbler syndrome/cauda equina
  • Dermatology: ringworm/allergies/ectoparasites/sarcoids/melanoma
  • Urinary tract: cystitis/bladder stones/tumours
  • Ophthalmology: ocular tumours/injuries/acute and chronic conditions
